The English word " cache " comes from French " cache " that says " hiding-place " .The French verb "cacher", meaning "to hide", is considered as having been derived from Latin "coactare", a verb meaning "to constrain", shaped after the past participle "coactus" of another verb, "cogere ", with the meaning "to drive together". "Cogere" itself is a composed verb of "co"and "agere". The problem is that this has nothing to do with hiding. In reality there is no known etymology for "cacher".
Just as in entry E 0157 (Hebrew 0514) we find a French word similar to Hebrew and without an established etymology.
Note:
- Proto-Semitic. This root is present in Aramaic and Syriac "כ ס א , kes'à = he covered, hid" . It is also used in Phoenician. Arabic shows cognates with the same root but related meanings in "kasā = he clothed" and "kisā = garment". Akkadian in "kusū" says "he covered". Proto-Semitic may well have used the root "*כ ס א , K S Aleph".
