Proto-Semitic *THENE --- *TĒN- Proto-Germanic

Baskets are made of twigs. So did the Jews in old Israel and so did the Goths at the various places they lived in . Apparently some used the root to indicate the used material, others for the resulting construction, the basket. The Goths intelligently did both and made a "tainjo" from "tains". And the Old English people did not do less.

Note:
  • Proto-Semitic. This Hebrew word is also seen as a loanword from Egyptian that had a " D N ' " for basket" and "metal vessel". But if the root existed in Indo European with "T N" how come Hebrew should loan it from Egyptian "D N" and then make "T N" out of it ? So probably Proto-Semitic just had already the Hebrew root : "* ט נ א, T N Aleph". In Post Biblical Hebrew there is a version " ט נ י , thenì = basket". This word may have existed earlier, without having been written as such in the Bible. For the comparison the vowels of the Hebrew noun have been proposed, as they may have been used as such in Proto-Semitic.

Note:
  • Proto-Germanic. In older languages we further find Old Saxon "tēn", Old Norse "teinn" and Old High German "zein" with a common change from " T " into " Z ". Proto-Germanic probably had "*T Ē N-".

Note:
  • Indo-European. We have no indications available for cognates in other branches of Indo-European. The comparison remains between Semitic and Germanic.
