Proto-Semitic *TOM --- *TOEM-ALIC TŪM-ALIK Middle Dutch
This is one of three entries with the combination "T M", and at the same time the third similarity of this root in Hebrew with older, Middle Dutch words. The others are in the entries E 0898 (Hebrew 0968) and GD 1107 (Hebrew 0969).
Note:
- Middle Dutch. In "toemalic, temalic" there is the suffix "-lic" , with an intermediate vowel ( here an A ) useful to link the suffix to the root. In modern Dutch this word has disappeared. Regretfully we lack for now any further information and the comparison stays between Semitic and Middle Dutch. There remains uncertainty as to the etymology and development towards "toemalic".
Note:
- Proto-Semitic. In our view the Hebrew root " T . M . M" has originated from " T . M". This is confirmed as we find that two consonant root in Ugaritic and Phoenician. Consequently the Proto-Semitic root has not been only "*ת מ ם , T M M ", as some suppose, but also the older "*ת ם , T M" and "*ת ו ם , T W M" . It is also found as "T M M" in Aramaic and Syriac "ת מ ם , tammem = to make entire, complete". Arabic has "tamma = was complete" and "tamām = complete".
