Proto-Semitic *‛INNÀ --- IAIUN-ARE < *IUN-ARE Latin

The concept of fasting is identical in these Latin and Hebrew words. The differences between the roots are two. One is that the Hebrew Ayin in this case corresponds with the Latin " I " that in reality is more of a "Y", that in Latin is not distinguished in spelling from the "I ". There are more examples of this phenomenon. The second difference is that Latin doubled this Y, without a change in meaning.

The similarity is there and a common origin is possible.

Note:
  • Hebrew. We might have inserted this entry under the letter Ayin, ע, as the T in "ta‛anit" is not part of the root. The sequence "Ayin – Noun " already is found in a little group of entries, as it was and is used to express many different concepts.

In modern Hebrew " to fast " is still expressed by the mentioned complex verb : "ה ת ע נ ה , "hit' anà".

The different meanings we referred to are " 1. to answer, 2. to be busy, 3. to sing, 4. to be bowed down, 5. to be afflicted, and, as in this entry " 6. " to fast, deprive ( also oneself) of food". In this sense 6. it is found in Leviticus 16.29 and Deuteronomium 8.3.

Note:
  • Proto-Semitic. The root in the senses 5 and/or 6 of the above note on Hebrew, that are related, is present in Aramaic, Syriac, Arabic and Akkadian . It was probably used in Proto-Semitic. For the comparison we have the intensive form of the verb in Hebrew, that may have been already used in Proto-Semitic. "* ע נ ה, 'innà".
