Hebrew *SHUL --- *SHOAL English, SCHŎL Middle Dutch
A "shoal" is a.o. a sandy elevation of the bottom of a body of water , an edge that can be dangerous for navigation . It does not with certainty have the same root as "shallow", that comes from Old English "sceald". This unless the final " D " in some way has disappeared also in the case of "shoal". The interface is narrow, and with some hesitation we have left this entry stand.
Note:
- Proto-Germanic Over a shoal the water is shallow. English "shoal" is related to Dutch and Middle Dutch "schol = shallow". The information is limited and a solid hypothesis not within easy reach.
Note:
- Hebrew . A "shul" is an edge or rim, that may be of different kinds. It is a hem of a skirt, but also the trail of a dress. But then it also stands for the rim at the bottom of a vessel, that may get in touch with a shoal.
Note:
- Proto-Semitic . We lack evidence from other Semitic languages for a specific hypothesis regarding the root of this entry.
