Hebrew *SAS --- *SĂS Dutch
It seems nearly odd to believe, but we see here exacly the same brief word, "sas", with precisely the same meanings, both in Biblical Hebrew and in Dutch. Well, facts are facts. Naturally nobody knows where the Dutch word comes from. We can be certain that it is not a loanword from old Hebrew.
Note:
- Hebrew has two verbs that are related to this word, an older "
ש
ו
ש, sos " and a newer
ש
י
ש , sīs", that both say "to be
full of joy".
There is also the longer noun, with a suffix "-on" : ש ש ו ן, sason = joy".
Note:
- Proto-Semitic. There is little information from other Semitic languages to support a hypothesis for Proto-Semitic. Arabic uses a related root in the word "sha'shà = enticing call", but that is not sufficient for a hypothesis.
