Proto-Semitic *SUT --- *SŪT- Proto-Germanic
English and Hebrew are simply identical here. We could not ask more. Yet we will have to look into this a bit further.
Note:
- English uses "suit" for various things. An archaic use of the root "suit" is that of "to provide with clothes, dress". We do not think that this has anything to do with Latin "sequita = pursuit",as some suggest.
Note:
- Middle Dutch "sutter" teaches us that a dress was also called a "sut", nearly identical to
English. This confirms that "suit" has nothing to do with a root "to follow". And it makes
clear that there can be real common origin with Hebrew regarding this root.
Note:
- Hebrew in entry E 0884 (Hebrew 0955) shows us another root of the same meaning: "SH Y T".
Note:
- Proto-Semitic is supposed to have the word "*ס ו ת , S W T", very near to Hebrew, but we have no information from other Semitic languages to confirm this hypothesis. There is the sister word of entry E 0884 (Hebrew 0955), with the root ש י ת , SH Y T", that should be a newer version. In our comparison we follow the existing hypothesis.
Note:
- Proto-Germanic. English "suit" is, oddly just like many other words, considered to have its origin in Latin "sequor = to follow". The similarity with Dutch ( and in fact Hebrew ) helps to forget that legend. The available information, though not abundant, points at a hypothesis for a possible Proto-Germanic "*S Ū T", as proposed in our comparison above. We see no possibility to establish a link to Indo-European.
