This entry is related to entry number E 0386 (Hebrew 0505 , "karà" ). The striking thing is that we see once more how the same concept, expressed by a root beginning with a K-sound, in Hebrew sometimes receives a Kaph, (K) , sometimes a Qoph (Q). The difference between the two is that the K is subject to changes, especially according to its position in a word, whereas the Q does not ever change. Apparently, when people began to write alphabetically, the two sounds when occurring at the beginning of a word were not easily distinguishable.

We refer to the extensive Notes under entry E 0386 (Hebrew 0505).

Note:
  • Proto-Semitic. This root is found in Ugaritic to express the digging of for example a well. Arabic "qāra = he cut (dug) a round hole" seems to be related. The root as found in Hebrew may have been used in Proto-Semitic : "*ק ו ר , Q W R".
