Proto-Semitic *LOTH --- *LAT- Indo-European

The basic difference between Greek and Hebrew is that the first uses this root for an intransitive verb and the second for a transitive one. This difference is insignificant as to the possibility of constating the common origin behind the similarity in the two languages. Further both have the TH, though this in itself is not conclusive because the changing of a T into TH occurs often without any change in meaning .

Note:
  • English "lanthanum " is the name of the element with atomic number 57 together with the other "lanthanides " ( 58-71 ) . The name has been given because these elements are " hidden " in certain oxydes .

Note:
  • Greek "lanthano" is a newer, nasalized form ( i.e. an N has been inserted ) of "lètho". On the basis of the same root it has formed "λαθρα , lathra" that says "secretly, furtively, hidden".

Note:
  • Hebrew on the basis of the same root has the word " ל ט , lath " that means "secret art".

Note:
  • Proto-Semitic. There is only limited information from other Semitic languages. Arabic "lātha" has been indicated as a cognate, but its meaning "it stuck" seems a bit too different to base ourselves on. Nearer is Akkadian "lithu = curtain". It is quite possible that Proto-Semitic used this same root "*ל ו ט , L W TH".

Note:
  • Indo-European . On the basis of the available information a hypothesis of "*L Ā T-" can be made.
