Proto-Semitic *KARET --- *KEIR-O Greek

We find in this entry a root that is fully similar to number E 0814 (Hebrew 0511) . The particular thing is that the message is again about identical between Greek and Hebrew, but quite different from that in the just mentioned entry. This is an interesting development of meaning "to cut off > to destroy" with a difference in the use of a vowel in the basic verbal form ( karat , karet ). And Latin this time does not contribute.

Note:
  • Proto-Semitic. This root is the same as in entry E 0814 (Hebrew 0511). The causative form of "karat" in the entry, " hikhrit ", repeats or copies the normal standard meanings of "to cut off" and "to destroy". Languages do complicate things now and then.

This Hebrew root is also seen in Moabite "כ ר ת ", and in Akkadian "kurrutu = to cut off" and probably was used in Proto-Semitic. "*כ ר ת , K R T".

Note:
  • Indo-European. With the specific meaning of "to destroy" we lack information about cognates in other Indo-European languages.
