Proto-Semitic *GHALAQ --- *GLISH- Proto-Germanic
The concept is the same, but the third consonant of each root is different : Q in Hebrew and S in Middle Dutch . Possibly these third consonants have completed the roots after the period in which the two language-groups separated. Entry E 0374 (Hebrew 0364) helps to make such a hypothesis more plausible. There we see also the Hebrew root "GH L SH", much nearer to a version of Middle Dutch. It is useful to read the comments in that entry.
Note:
- Hebrew. The root covers also figurative meanings like "to flatter". "Gheleq" stands for "smoothness" as well as "flattery".
Note:
- Proto-Semitic. Proto-Semitic is considered to have used already the root we see for Hebrew, and that is also seen in Arabic "ghalaqa = he made smooth": "*ח ל ק , GH L Q".
Note:
- Proto Germanic. We refer once more to entry E 0374 (Hebrew 0364) , where Proto-Germanic "*GL I SH-" as a hypothesis is found.
