Proto-Semitic *GAD --- *GOD Proto-Germanic

The word "God"is , with some variations like German "Gott" and Swedish "Gud" found in all Germanic languages. No etymology has been found. The similarity with Biblical Hebrew at first sight seems revealing in this sense.

The divinity Gad, mentioned in Isaiah 65.11 certainly is not a Hebrew God. It is found in Phoenician and Aramaic inscriptions and apparently this divinity procured good fortune. Consequently the name became synonym for " good fortune" and "luck". And the fact is that the root "G . D" is well present in Germanic.

Note:
  • Proto-Semitic. This root is used in Phoenician and in Aramaic "ג ד א , gaddą = good fortune " . It may well have been present already in Proto-Semitic. "*ג ד , G . D " .

Note:
  • Proto-Germanic. In older Germanic languages we see Old Norse "goð,, guð", Gothic "guth", Old Saxon, Old English, Old Frisian and Middle Dutch "god", with Old High German changing into "got". The pattern is typically that of an original vowel "O" and a final "D". Proto-Germanic probably had "*G Ŏ D".

Note:
  • Indo-European.

It has been tried to explain the word as inspired by the concept of "invocation", seeking support from words like Old Indian "hūta = calling" of the basis " = calling". This after an epithet of Indra: "puruhūtás = much-invoked". Also Old Irish "guth = voice" and Old Church Slavonic "zŭvati = to call" have been quoted. The distance remains considerable though, both in sound and meaning. We have to limit our comparison to Semitic and Germanic.
