Proto-Semitic *DADÀ --- *DAND-IN-ER French < DĒN Indo-European
As remarked under entry E 0235 (Hebrew 0307) , there are no visible traces from English back to Latin or Greek, just a similarity with Hebrew. This Hebrew word should be an intensive form of a basic verb "*dadà".
Note:
- English. To swagger would also be a right translation, but it has taken principally the well-known more figurative meaning of strutting, or even that of bragging. Toddle is an intensive form of a verb "*tode".
Note:
- French. Dandiner can be seen as a nasalized form , that is the N has been inserted later in an existing root of two D’s. It is useful to compare this entry with number E 0235 (Hebrew 0307). In both French and Hebrew we see slightly different words with comparable differences in their messages. They are a nice example of good linguistic diversification.
Note:
- Proto-Semitic. Proto-Semitic may well have used this same root, as it is present with perhaps related meanings in Aramaic "ד ד י , D D Y, daddì = he led a child" and, said of a wobbling camel, Arabic "da'daa' = it went on quickly". Proto-Semitic possibly had this "*ד ד א , D D Aleph".

- Indo-European. With only French, Italian and English words, without any recognizable link with Latin, it is difficult to make a solid hypothesis for Indo-European. We refer to the hypothesis "*D Ē N-" in entry E 0236 (Hebrew 0635)
