Proto-Semitic *BATHAL --- *BATAL-OS Greek

The idleness of Hebrew "bathalà" also refers to "idle talk", which brings it nearer to the combination of meanings in the Greek word batalos, and also to Greek "F th.l" that is concentrated on idle talk instead of idleness as such. As to the other aspect, dissoluteness is not the same as idleness, but both are considered negatively on account of the lack of proper actions .

Note:
  • Proto-Semitic. A solid hypothesis for a Proto-Semitic root "*ב ט ל, B TH L" , similar to the Hebrew one, can be based on the identical roots found in cognates in Aramaic, Arabic, Ethiopian and Akkadian.
