The Greek and Hebrew words are well-nigh identical. This goes both for the root and for the suffix "-ia". This kind of suffix is common to both languages and frequent in both. This in itself is an indication of common origin!
However striking this similarity may be , it cannot be used as proof of
a common origin : the specific use that is identical to the Greek one,
that of "wandering " of pilgrims, is only Modern Hebrew.
Note:
- Hebrew. This word comes from the root "‛ alą " "meaning " to rise, move upwards". Today it is used to indicate the returning to the Land of Israel. In general it talks about a voyage, trip or travel that leads litterally or figuratively to a higher place. When wanting to specify a pilgrim’s wandering the word "
ל
ר
ג
ל, leregel = on foot" is added.
